LCO Conservation Warden
*Tribal preference will apply to qualified applicants in accordance with the Lac Courte Oreilles Policies & Procedures Manual, consistent with federal Indian preference requirements.
The Conservation Warden is responsible for enforcing the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Conservation Codes on lands and waters within the exterior boundaries of the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation. This position protects natural resources, monitors hunting and fishing activities, conducts investigations, issues permits and citations, and serves as a liaison between the Conservation Department, Tribal Members, and the public. The Conservation Warden plays a vital role in preserving Tribal resources while promoting conservation awareness and public safety.
- Patrol Tribal lands and waters to enforce hunting, fishing, trapping, and conservation regulations
- Monitor hunting and fishing activities, prepare catch reports, and tag fish and wildlife as required
- Issue permits, citations, and conduct investigations related to Tribal conservation law violations
- Testify in court proceedings regarding citations, investigations, and enforcement actions
- Maintain daily logs, vehicle reports, monthly reports, and other required documentation
- Respond to emergencies, assist other law enforcement agencies, and provide emergency aid when appropriate
- Conduct public education presentations, demonstrations, and community outreach activities focused on conservation awareness
- Enforce the Tribal Animal Control Ordinance and investigate reports involving animal acts, neglect, cruelty, or abandonment
- Maintain Tribal campsites and assist with resource protection initiatives throughout the reservation
- Wisconsin Law Enforcement certifiable or completion of an approved police academy prior to start date
- High school diploma or GED and an Associate Degree or 60 college credits completed
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured under Tribal insurance policies
- Must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment
- No felony convictions
- Strong investigative, report writing, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding duties in outdoor environments and emergency situations
- Must successfully complete a drug screen, psychological assessment, medical examination, vision and hearing test, and background investigation
