Protection for What Matters Most

The Consumer Financial Services Regulatory Authority, or simply “the Authority”, was established in 2015 by the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians to ensure public confidence in Consumer Financial Services. The Authority ensures that Consumers are protected from unlawful and unfair products and practices by enforcing tribal and federal laws and regulations within the Tribe’s jurisdiction. 

ESTABLISHMENT & PURPOSE

The Authority is an independent tribal government subdivision and was created to operate on behalf of the Tribe for the benefit of the Tribe by enforcing tribal law to protect Consumers.  The Authority is funded through its licensing and enforcement practices, as well as from the Tribe’s general fund.  Although under the direction of the Governing Board, the Code ensures that the Authority operates with sufficient autonomy to remain insulated from the Tribe’s political and economic concerns.

 

SERVICES WE PROVIDE

The objective of the Authority is to implement the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribal Consumer Financial Services Regulatory Code (“Code”), and any later promulgated regulations, to ensure fair and equitable treatment of consumers and to enforce compliance of the Code.

The Authority implements this Code and regulations promulgated thereunder to ensure fair and equitable treatment of Consumers and to enforce compliance of the Code by Licensees. 

Additionally, under the federal Consumer Financial Protection Act (“CFPA”), 12 USC § 5552, the Authority is empowered to work in concert with the CFPB and state agencies to enforce they CFPA, any of its enumerated consumer protection laws, and all CFPB regulations, with respect to Tribal licensees.
