Position Summary

The Lac Courte Oreilles Head Start & Early Head Start Program is seeking a caring and reliable Head Start Teacher Aide / Bus Assistant to support early childhood education and safe transportation.

This position supports classroom instruction, assists children throughout the school day, and helps ensure safe transportation to and from school. Candidates should have a passion for working with young children and to a commitment to supporting families within the Lac Courte Oreilles tribal community.

 

Key Responsibilities

Classroom Support

  • Assist the Lead Teacher with daily classroom activities and lesson preparation
  • Support age‑appropriate learning activities that promote children’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development
  • Help set up classroom materials and educational displays
  • Assist children during meals, rest periods, and indoor/outdoor play
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing, and organized classroom environment
  • Observe children and and assist with documentation as directed
  • Complete accident and incident reports when necessary
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of child and family information

Bus Assistant Duties

  • Assist the bus driver with safety transporting students to and from school
  • Help children board and exit the bus safely
  • Monitor students during transport and ensure safety and proper behavior

Professional and Team Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, specialists, and support staff
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development
  • Complete and maintain an annual Professional Development Plan
  • Greet children and families in a professional and welcoming manner
  • Encourage family involvement in the Head Start and Early Head Start programs
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age of older
  • High school diploma or equivalent (required before hire)
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) credential with preschool specialization or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license and eligibility for Tribal auto insurance coverage
  • Ability to pass:
    • Pre-employment drug screening
    • Background checks and fingerprinting
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Health clearances including TB test and physical
  • SIDS and Abusive Head Trauma certification (required before hire)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of experience working with preschool-aged children
  • Experience adapting curriculum for:
    • At-risk children
    • Children with special needs
    • Gifted learners
    • Culturally diverse populations
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent kneeling, bending, stooping, and sitting on the floor
  • Ability to lift children weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to remain attentive and active throughout the workday
