MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and to enhance public safety while working with the diverse communities to improve their quality of life. Our mandate is to do so with honor and integrity, while at all times conducting ourselves with the highest ethical standards to maintain public confidence.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department was founded in 2004 with four (4) officers and has grown to a department of 8-10 officers. All officers are fully certified in the State of Wisconsin to enforce all state and local laws and ordinances. All officers receive continual training throughout the year to retain their state credentials and certification.

In addition to law enforcement, the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department is equipped and trained to respond to violent crime scenes, vehicle and snowmobile accidents, medical emergencies, as well as search and rescue missions. These are sometimes accomplished with the assistance of other area departments.

The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department participates in traffice mobilizations three times per year through a grant funded by a BIA. The three traffic mobilizations that our department participates in are “Don’t Shatter the Dream”, “Click it or Ticket”, and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”.

The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department is highly involved in our school system. The department has a School Resource Officer who is in the school buildings on a daily basis as well as other officers who participate in school events such as presentations in classes and at assemblies as well as giving presentations at conferences and special events in the community.

The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department has a K-9 Unit that is used in the arrest and investigatations of criminal complaints. The K-9 Unit also participates in many school presentations as well as other community events. The department also provides patrol and security at tribal events such as Honor the Earth Powwow, foot races, as well as school sporting events and school lock-ins.

The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department also participates in the Annual Drug Take Back Campaign and there is a permanent drug drop box located in the lobby of the police department.
