Public Defender
*Tribal preference will apply to qualified applicants in accordance with the Lac Courte Oreilles Policies & Procedures Manual, consistent with federal Indian preference requirements.
The Public Defender provides legal representation and advocacy services for enrolled members of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. This position focuses primarily on criminal defense matters in Wisconsin State Courts and serves as an important resource for Tribal members navigating the legal system. The Public Defender also oversees support staff and works collaboratively with Tribal leadership and legal professionals.
- Serve as Public Defender for enrolled Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Members
- Provide legal representation in state court proceedings, negotiations, and related legal matters
- Prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, legal memoranda, and other court documents
- Research legal issues and develop defense strategies on behalf of clients
- Maintain client communications and provide legal guidance regarding case matters
- Supervise Public Defender support staff and assist with office operations
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
- Member in good standing of the State Bar of Wisconsin or eligible for admission following the next bar examination
- Admission to practice before the Wisconsin Supreme Court prior to start date
- Knowledge of Federal Indian Law, Tribal law, and federal and State court systems
- Strong legal research, writing, litigation, and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Valid river’s license and ability to meet insurance requirements
- Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening
