The School Safety Officer (SSO) fosters a safe and supportive school environment by combining safety practices with student mentorship. The SSO bridges students, families, schools, and law enforcement, addresses truancy through early intervention and family engagement, and provides safety and security during school hours and events.
Responsibilities
Maintain a visible, approachable presence to deter unsafe behavior and promote a positive school climate
Collaborate with school staff and law enforcement on safety policies, emergency drills, and crisis response
Address and investigate safety issues (e.g., fights, weapons, drugs, bullying)
Support enforcement of school rules with a focus on prevention and restorative practices
Work with the Truancy Prevention Coordinator to monitor attendance, conduct outreach, and issue truancy citations
Mentor students, provide guidance, and facilitate workshops on safety and decision-making
Participate in family nights, school events, and community outreach
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree required
Experience in law enforcement, military, school safety, youth services, or attendance enforcement
Knowledge of tribal and state truancy laws preferred
Experience in de-escalation, crisis intervention, or restorative practices preferred
Strong communication and relationship-building skills
Must pass background check and drug screen
Valid driver’s license and insurance
Familiarity with the LCO community preferred
Tribal member preference applies

40-hour workweek, paid on a 52-week basis for consistent income
